DAKAR, Sept 23 (Reuters) – An air traffic control strike grounded flights in and out of West and Central Africa on Friday, causing chaos for passengers travelling to Europe, the United States and inside the continent.

Staff at the Agency for Aerial Navigation Safety in Africa and Madagascar (ASECNA), which regulates air traffic control across 18 countries, stopped working on Friday during a dispute over working conditions and pay, defying court rulings and government bans barring them from doing so.

On Friday night, a busy one for travel, flights to and from Europe and the United States were halted, said Reuters’ reporters at Senegal’s Blaise Diagne International Airport and in the United States.

Flights inside Africa were also impacted, airlines and passengers said.

ASECNA told customers to check airline websites for updates.

“In spite of the prohibition of the strike by all the courts … the Union of Air Traffic Controllers’ Unions (USYCAA) has launched a wildcat strike,” ASECNA said on Friday.

“We have already exhausted both administrative and institutional remedies in the management of this crisis, but we have in front of us trade unionists who are stubborn to do whatever they want,” ASECNA’s head of human resources, Ceubah Guelpina, told a press conference.

The All Blacks have been handed another injury blow with prop Ofa Tu’ungafasi being ruled out of the upcoming South African tour.

The 47-test prop sustained a neck injury in the third test against Ireland in Wellington and will remain in New Zealand when the squad travels to South Africa, the All Blacks confirmed on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old will continue to work on his recovery, with a goal of returning when the All Blacks meet Argentina in Christchurch next month.

Tu’ungafasi joins the list of All Blacks who will not travel to South Africa, which includes Brodie Retallick, Jack Goodhue and fellow Blues prop Nepo Laulala.

Uncapped Crusaders tighthead Fletcher Newell has been called in to travel with the squad as a replacement player.

It leaves the All Blacks low on experience in the front row.

Aidan Ross, George Bower, Angus Ta’avao, Ethan de Groot and Tyrel Lomax, who was named as a travelling replacement player in the initial squad, are the other props for the tour.

Newell, who will join the All Blacks this week for the first time, said it was a special moment to be called in to the team.

“It’s just an awesome moment and I really can’t put any words together at the moment,” he said.

“I pretty much rung my whole family after. It’s pretty surreal. Everyone was really really happy and we shared some pretty good moments.

“There’s a number of Crusaders and leaders in that environment. I’m really excited to connect with them like I had all season. It is quite daunting but I just can’t wait to get in there and learn from everyone.”

The All Blacks will travel to South Africa this week ahead of back-to-back tests against the Springboks on August 7 and 14.

Chile will reopen Easter Island to tourists in August

SANTIAGO, May 20 (Reuters) – Easter Island, one of Chile’s biggest tourist attractions, will reopen to visitors starting Aug. 1 after access was restricted at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chile’s government said on Friday.

Easter Island, over 2,000 miles (3,219 km) from the coast of Chile, has over a thousand stone statues, giant heads that were carved centuries ago by the island’s inhabitants, which have brought it fame and UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

“As of August 1, an increase in flights (two or three weekly flights, according to the epidemiological situation) and the opening of tourism, in conditions which will be communicated in a timely manner, will be allowed,” the economy ministry said in a statement.

The government said it will improve health infrastructure to handle eventual coronavirus cases in the remote island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean known for its stone Moai statues. The government also plans subsidies to help small businesses that have been impacted by the pandemic.

Residents of the island protested the presence of tourists when the pandemic started in March 2020, even taking over the airport to stop flights from the mainland.

To reopen the island, the government has started an official dialogue to “find a solution to the territorial conflict that has existed for over 50 years” between the local community and the state, it said in the statement

TOKYO, May 30 (Reuters) – Japan’s easing of a two-year ban on foreign tourists seeks to balance the enormous economic importance of tourism with concerns that travellers would trigger a COVID outbreak, insiders say.

Under the decision, Japan will allow in a limited number of foreign tourists on package tours starting June 10. Last week a few “test tours”, mainly of overseas travel agents, started to arrive.

Relaxing some of the world’s strictest pandemic border measures required months of pressure from travel and tourism executives, three insiders told Reuters, describing both the government’s fears of public backlash if infections spiked and the industry’s concerns of an economic wipeout.

“There were worries that foreign tourists would include a lot of people with bad manners – people who don’t wear masks or don’t use hand sanitiser and that infections could spread again,” said one tourism company executive, who like the others spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Travel column: Nashville is a mecca for musicians | Community

Nashville marketers were smart and got there first with the soubriquet “Music City.”

Most people think of country music when they think of Nashville, and they wouldn’t be wrong, but all types of music can be found in this mecca for musicians.

Keep your ears open and you’ll hear lots of Nashville sounds.

The beginnings of Nashville’s prominence began in a small, Black college — now part of the group known as HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities).

These schools were all founded before the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Many, like Fisk (1866), were founded right after the Civil War.

By 1871, the school was struggling financially. George White, school treasurer and music professor, formed a nine-member, a capella ensemble, the Fisk Jubilee Singers, and took them on tour to raise money for the school.

Their repertoire consisted mostly of spirituals and work songs — a genre new to white audiences. Their fame spread, and a year later, they were invited to sing at the White House.

In 1873, they toured Europe, performing before Queen Victoria, who commissioned a floor-to-ceiling portrait of the group, which can still be seen today in Jubilee Hall on the Fisk campus. Queen Victoria was so impressed that she told the group they must be from the Music City of the United States, and the city’s slogan was born.

The next musical event that added to Nashville’s reputation was a 1925, hour-long radio show, “WSM Barn Dance,” bringing country music to a number of states. By 1939, the show was picked up by NBC for coast-to-coast coverage, and the name Grand Ole Opry replaced Barn…
