A Russian warship armed with advanced hypersonic missiles completed a drill in the Atlantic Ocean, ahead of joint naval exercises with the Chinese and South African navies scheduled for next month, the Russian Defense Ministry said Wednesday.

Russia’s Admiral Gorshkov frigate, armed with Zircon hypersonic missiles, practiced “delivering a missile strike against an enemy surface target,” the ship’s commander Igor Krokhmal said in a video released by the ministry.

The exercise, described by state news agency Tass as an “electronic launch” or virtual simulation, confirmed the “designed characteristics” of the missile system, said Krokhmal, who pointed to the missiles’ purported ability to reach distances of more than 900 kilometers (559 miles).

The test was part of a long voyage of the Admiral Gorshkov frigate launched earlier this month, when Russian state media said the warship was dispatched with the hypersonic missiles. The deployment will also include joint training with the Chinese and South African navies off the coast of South Africa, according to Moscow and Pretoria.

The exercises come as Russia nears the first anniversary of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine and marks both a show of force and – with the joint exercises – an opportunity for Moscow to show it is not isolated on the world stage, despite wide…

The independent South African-based airline, Airlink, is acquiring a 40 per cent strategic equity holding in privately-owned Windhoek-based FlyNamibia.

FlyNamibia is the scheduled airline division of Westair Aviation established in 1967 initially as an aircraft maintenance facility, but which evolved into Namibia’s most experienced aviation company. It began scheduled passenger operations in June 2019 after the Namibian Transport Commission granted it carrier status.

  • Airlink buys 40 per cent of FlyNamibia, Namibia’s only operating scheduled domestic airline, under a deal announced at the end of September that aims to expand air service both within and outside the Southern Africa country.
  • The acquisition will bring the two carriers closer together with all FlyNamibia flights transitioning to using Airlink’s IATA code ‘4Z’ in an effort to boost sales and improve international connectivity.

The acquisition is for an undisclosed amount in a strategic equity partnership punted to fill the short- and medium-haul regional market gap left by the collapse of Air Namibia. This is also expected to accelerate Namibia’s post-pandemic recovery and drive the expansion of efficient scheduled airline services to, from and within Namibia.

Airlink will also provide additional airline operations, technical and commercial skills training, and development support to FlyNamibia.

Despite her key role in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, details about Lilian Ngoyi‘s life remain sparse. The short paragraphs on her legacy repeat a few well-worn phrases. South Africa’s “mother of the black resistance”, a widow and rumoured lover of Nelson Mandela, and the first woman member of the national executive committee – the core leadership of the African National Congress (ANC), the resistance movement that would later become the government of a democratic South Africa. She was also, of course, one of the leaders of the country’s famous Women’s March.

On 9 August 1956, now commemorated as Women’s Day in South Africa, Ngoyi and other woman leaders led an estimated 20,000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, the seat of power of the white minority government. They were protesting extending the much-hated pass laws to women. These laws required black citizens to carry pass documents to better control their movement.

Beyond this, Ma-Ngoyi, as she was affectionately known, remains an often-mentioned but somewhat two-dimensional figure in history.

Perhaps because she was not the wife of a high-profile ANC leader and lived much of her life as a banned person, dying in penury, there is no Lilian Ngoyi Foundation and no substantive biography. Yet the pioneering role she played, and the sacrifices she made, extended well beyond the Women’s March.

Upbringing

Born Lilian Masediba Matabane in 1911, Ngoyi had a different life from other anti-apartheid struggle stalwarts. Not only was she an independent woman, but she was born into urban poverty. She did not hail from a royal or rural household like the Mandelas, Sisulus and other elite members of the ANC, whose role in the fight against apartheid is well documented.

Ngoyi was the granddaughter of a trailblazing Methodist minister, a historical figure in his own right. But his extraordinary contribution to the missionaries’ endeavours in southern Africa did not translate into any significant upward mobility for the family.

Her mother, though literate, worked as a washerwoman and domestic worker and her father was a miner and labourer, who died of mining-related lung disease. As the only girl in a family of four, she was the last in line when it came to education. Still, Ngoyi’s family rallied to keep her in Kilnerton, a leading black Methodist school, even though she was only able to complete her junior schooling. Lawrence “Larry” Rudolph, 67, was found guilty on Monday of murdering his wife by shooting her during an African safari holiday in 2016.

The wealthy dentist was convicted of murder and mail fraud for cashing in on nearly $US7.2 million ($A10.4 million) in accidental death and life insurance polices after killing his wife of 34 years, Bianca Rudolph.

Assistant US lawyer Bryan Fields told jurors that the couple, big-game hunting enthusiasts, were wrapping up a trip to Kafue National Park in Zambia on October 11, 2016, when she was shot once in the heart with a hunting rifle.

Lawyers for Rudolph argued that his wife accidentally killed herself when she dropped the gun while hurriedly packing at about 5.30am.

But Mr Fields countered that the angle of the shot slightly above Bianca Rudolph and 0.6 to 1.06 metres away from her could not have been caused by the gun accidentally firing.

Prosecutors told the jury that Rudolph killed his wife so he could be with his office-assistant-turned-mistress Lori Milliron, who was also found guilty on Monday of being an accessory after the fact to murder, obstruction of a grand jury, and two counts of perjury.

The dentist, who owned a successful dental franchise in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, had a net worth of $US15 million ($A21.6 million) that he didn’t want to split with his wife in the event of a divorce, according to prosecutors.

Local Zambian authorities and the insurance companies, which conducted their own investigations, concluded that Bianca’s death was an accident.

Rudolph’s conduct after the killing was suspicious, assistant US lawyer Garreth Winstead told jurors. He filed the insurance claim the day before his wife’s funeral, went to Las Vegas with a woman who was not his mistress the day after the funeral and invited Milliron to move into his home that same month.

Most damning, though, was the claim that Rudolph confessed within earshot of a bartender at a steakhouse in Phoenix near Paradise Valley, Arizona, where he and Milliron bought a home together.

The bartender said in early 2020 that he overheard Rudolph say, “I killed my f***ing wife for you!” Rudolph testified that he’d actually said, “Now they’re saying I killed my f***ing wife for you!” after learning that the FBI was investigating him.

Rudolph testified last week that he had an open marriage and was content in his relationship. “I would not murder my wife,” he told jurors on the stand.

A South African woman who recently moved to Sydney pointed out a “confusing” detail about how we run petrol stations Down Under.

When an expat moves to Australia they’re often taken back by the way we do things. Why? because the way we do things Down Under tends to be a big culture shock.

Mahle Majola relocated from South Africa to Sydney in May this year – and since then she has experienced what many expats have experienced, “confusion”.

In a TikTok, that has amassed almost 30,000 views in two days, Mahle filmed herself at a local Metro petrol station.

But it was one detail that left her shocked and wanting answers.

“This is confusing,” she said while at a petrol pump. “I feel like I’m in an American movie.

“How are there no petrol attendance,” she asked.

“There is no one here. You basically fill the tank yourself based on how much petrol you want and then you go inside and pay.”

Mahle said she “doesn’t understand” how Aussies are “so trusting”.

“Like, why wouldn’t someone drive off?” she asked.

“The price of petrol is so high in South Africa and in Sydney (it) is ridiculous right now.”

Aussies jumped in the comments section to tell Mahle there’s “cameras everywhere”.

“Labour costs are just too much here to have attendants. Plus cameras track every inch of your car – so if you don’t pay they send the details to police,” one person wrote.

“There are cameras that watch the number plate of the cars in case someone drives off,” another pointed out, to which Mahle responded: “But isn’t it so much work to now search for those cars and open a police case?”
