Michelle Law’s fierce hit comedy Single Asian Female heads to Dunstan Playhouse next month, ending State Theatre Company South Australia’s 2022 season on a high.
Premiering as part of the OzAsia Festival, the all-new production of Law’s 2017 debut play comes to the Adelaide stage under the direction of Nescha Jelk, who has assembled a brilliant cast including The Family Law’s Fiona Choi and Adelaide’s own Juanita Navas-Nguyen (Eureka Day, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?) and Elvy-Lee Quici in her mainstage debut.
Choi plays restaurateur and family matriarch Pearl, a first-generation Chinese immigrant who lives on the Sunshine Coast where she runs Chinese restaurant, The Golden Phoenix. Pearl is constantly at odds with her westernised daughters, Zoe and Mei (played by Navas-Nguyen and Quici), who are having issues of their own – teenage Mei is grappling with her identity ahead of the school formal and eternally-single Zoe is having a quarter-life crisis after some terrible dates.
They’re all at a crossroads, but Pearl is harbouring a secret that is going to change their lives. Brilliantly funny and incisive while exploring social attitudes around race and gender, Single Asian…
